September 20: The perfect imperfect line
Today I was in the mood for drawing with imperfect tools. I honestly don't remember the last time I tried drawing with the ink bottle dropper, but that awkward, wobbly line? Totally my jam. It perfectly captures movement and character in a way a clean line never could — it feels like real life.
Then I reached for a pen I never use — an old dip pen drawing nib, almost certainly bent, definitely scratchy. I genuinely struggled to get marks onto the page with it. But the faces that came out of that struggle were so full of character, same as the flowers I'd drawn with the ink dropper.
Turns out the "wrong" tool sometimes gives you exactly the right mark.
